Delicious & Divine: Dark Matter Cafe

A quiet space with books and coffee? Count me in!

The Moline Library has been a favorite attraction of visitors since its new building opened in 2006. Dewey’s Copper Café was a must visit each time patrons walked through the door. The service was always reliable and friendly, as former owner Salma Arabi made you feel right at home with her compassion and delicious menu. Now owned by her friend, Mindy Alshieka, this wonderful environment is only being enhanced.

Now called Dark Matter Café, it offers a plethora of bake goodies, smoothies, coffee drinks, teas, wraps, sandwiches, salads, and, of course, my favorite – hummus platters! Gluten free cookies and brownies are an added bonus. Plus, they are adding lettuce wrap sandwiches for those who are gluten-intolerant, as well. It’s all whipped up with, “a dose of science fun!” Each day a new science quote delivers a bit of wisdom along with your daily dose of caffeine. Equally interesting, there’s a “competition” for the newest drink of the day between the owner and her employees.

“It’s like one big science lab in here! We are always creating new things,” tells Alshieka.

An appropriate theme that branches off the lifelong learning mission of the library.

Next time you’re in town, stop in the beautiful Moline Library and grab a cup o’joe or some delicious lunch and crack open a good book (or, in my case, write your next article) in the newest edition – Dark Matter Café!
