One of the top adventure races in the Midwest is celebrating their 10th Anniversary this weekend! On September 19, 2015, the Quad Cities will be filled with outdoor enthusiasts who are taking part in River Action’s Taming of the Slough race.
Taming of the Slough is a combination paddling, mountain biking, trail running event that you will never forget. Whether you watch or participate, you’ll quickly see why this race has been a favorite of thrill seekers for the past 10 years.
There is nothing like watching kayaks, canoes, and stand up paddle boards cut through the morning steam off of the Mississippi River during the 3.8 mile paddle which kicks off the race. The water is usually quite calm at that time of the day, and you’ll enjoy the view as you round Campbell’s Island.
The next phase of the race is a combination paved/off-road bicycling route which includes 3.8 miles of paved path and 4.5 miles of off road at Illiniwek State Park (one of my favorite mountain biking paths!) You may also enjoy my previous article; Pedal, Paddle, Trail.
Finishing out the adventure race is a 2 mile trail run.
