Beginning next month at the Davenport location of Indigo Wellness is a new class called “Modern Dance, Mindful Movement”. The class starts Wednesday, February 3, goes from 5:30-6:30pm, and will meet once a week for 6 weeks.
As an avid fan of yoga and dancing in the name of fitness (I’ve been doing Zumba for years.), I was intrigued. I reached out to the instructor, Nikki Jones, who also happens to be a friend of mine. I invited her to show me what she’s working on and to hear all about her next adventure.
Nikki was born and raised in Moline and has always loved dancing. She studied the art form in high school and while she attended college at Southern Illinois University. Originally she was studying to become a paralegal and hated it, yearning for something a bit more creative. From there, she turned her attention to Marketing.
Nikki graduated with her Masters of Science degree from Full Sail University in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Her thesis was centered on business model for a hula-hoop company, as she is also a talented hula hooper who has been hooping for about 6 years, and has incorporated it into some of her past dancing commitments. For a year Nikki danced with the local Burlesque troop and taught classes on how to hoop.
When Nikki came over to my house, she showed me some of her ideas and told me a bit about Modern Dance, and the connection to yoga seems natural and seamless. You can see the similarities through the heart picture below.
Both Yoga and Modern Dance emphasize a focus on the breath and the movement that follows; both discuss centrality and being in tune with your core; both champion fluidity through flow over the rigidity of strict shapes. One can see how the two could compliment one another.
According to the class’s Facebook page, “The class will start with a warm-up and introduction to technique, move into guided improvisation and finish with a short choreography that brings all elements together. No prior dance experience needed.” Nikki also told me that she will discuss the history of Modern Dance as well as touch on a few of the noteworthy figures of the form.
“Modern Dance, Mindful Motion”, is $90 for the 6 weeks; you have the option of signing up for the full six weeks or as a drop-in for $15 a visit. The studio is located at 5161 Utica Ridge Road in Davenport.
