Local Chocolate Lowdown

Come February, we have long forgotten gingerbread cookies and that creamy pumpkin pie that laid our tables over the winter holidays. We’ve said so long and found new love in all things chocolate. Besides, chocolate (well, dark chocolate) has been said to improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.

Whether it’s boxes that grace your counter or that expensive bar of dark chocolate someone you love ordered special, that’s not the last of the chocolate extravaganza with Valentine’s Day coming around the corner. And what better way to dive into the sweet treats that seeing what the Quad Cities offers locally?

CHOCOLATE MANORChocolate Manor. Gourmet handcrafted candies? Sounds like a treat in this winter weather. Nothing warms the heart more than a good piece of chocolate or a candy delicately with filled with a caramel sauce. For this treat, try Chocolate Manor located on East 2nd Street in Downtown Davenport. They are open Monday – Friday from 10 AM – 6 PM and Saturday from 10 AM-5 PM.

chocolate leclaire2The Shameless Chocoholic. Old time candy stores are a rare treat in this modern decade. Shops that line shelves with candy strips and chocolate delicacies galore have begun disappearing as we grow further and further away from the twentieth century. But the charm of the river town of LeClaire, Iowa, brings these stores back in style. The Shameless Chocoholic is open Monday – Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM and Sundays 12 to 4 PM. They also have a new location in downtown Moline.

Fannie May Chocolate. It’s the delicacy highly sought after during any holiday season. Working at Ann’s Hallmark shop in Bettendorf, I watched as box after box of Mint Meltaways and other assorted varieties flew off the shelves during the Christmas season. And from experience I can tell you that it’s definitely the quality candy you may want to stock away for your loved one or ship off to your college student this February. Fannie May is offered in Hallmark stores around the QC, but if you want to go straight to the company, there is a Fannie May outlet located on West Kimberly in Davenport. They are open Monday – Friday 10 AM to 8 PM; Saturdays 10 AM to 6 PM; Sundays 11 AM to 5 PM.
