Saturday, July 16, 2016, is the second annual River’s Edge Homebrew Festi-ALE. Located on the District Plaza of Downtown, Rock Island. Festiv-Ale welcomes over a dozen different homebrew clubs sharing their most creative and delicious homemade beers, wines, and meads to an estimated 500 attendees.
Jason Parris, local talent buyer for Rock Island Brewing Co.; is a homebrewer himself. He, and his brother Justen Parris, are the two behind Festiv-Ale, as well as active participants in the River’s Edge Fermentation Society known as REFS. They have been homebrewing together for 8 years and wanted to create something different for the Quad Cities.
Jason said, “We were looking at all the other commercial beer festivals in the area and were trying to find something unique…something cool that the state of Illinois hasn’t done for awhile. It’s a way to show people that they can brew beers that are every bit as good as the ones they can buy at the store.”
All 3 local homebrew clubs, MUGZ, REFS, and the Powder Keggers will have brews to taste; there will also be clubs from Chicago, Cedar Rapids, Galesburg, and Geneseo. There will be samples given out all throughout the afternoon and will include special, timed releases.
Festi-Ale will also feature “reverse collaborations” from several of the local breweries including Radicle Effect Brewerks, Bent River Brewing Co., Iron Spike Brewing, and Geneseo Brewing Co. A “reverse collaboration” is when a homebrewer invites a commercial brewer to brew a batch of beer on a homebrew set-up. For example, Rich Nunez of Radicle Effect Brewerks brewed a batch of beer on the Parris’ Brothers homebrew rig and it will be served at Festiv-Ale.
There will be food served by RIBCO and music to follow. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased online, or in-person at RIBCO or area CO-OP Records. You get a commemorative glass, 15 beer samples, and the first 200 people get a pretzel necklace. You will also have the option to buy more drink tickets at the event.
River’s Edge Homebrew Festiv-Ale on Saturday, July 16, from 2-6 pm is sure to be a fun afternoon filled with concoctions made by many a Midwesterner. Join in on the fun!
