The College Hill District is located around the intersection of 14th Avenue and 30th Street in Rock Island, Illinois. The area has grown from being a small business area supported by Augustana College students to a vibrant retail area of the Quad Cities.
There are over 60 different businesses; from antiques and vintage wares to specialty teas, coffees, and restaurants that one could easily spend an afternoon there.
Some of the highlights of the neighborhood:
For antique shopping, make sure to stop into Estate of Grace, located at 1230 30th Street. There is an eclectic mix of the old and the new, the handcrafted and estate-sale discovered, a wonderful place for gift shopping.
After stopping there, don’t forget to visit Fred & Ethel’s, located at 1326 30th Street. It’s a vintage shop focused on the trends of the 1950’s, from clothes to barware to home décor, you’re guaranteed to find a treasure inside.
Right next door at 2963 30th Street is Tim’s Corner, one of the QCA’s oldest comic book shops. Tim is almost always behind the counter and can walk you through the maze of wonderful collectibles he has stashed throughout his shop.
Shopping can often make one thirsty; luckily around the corner is Radicle Effect Brewerks at 1341 31st Street, the Quad Cities original nano brewery. The staff and customers are both welcoming and helpful in navigating one of the best beer selections in the QCA. A great place to have a pint or try their popular bloody mary.
If looking for a beer and a bite to eat, stop into Kavanaugh’s Hilltop at 1228 30th Street. Located in the back of the establishment is Rolling Smoke BBQ, some of the best in the area. Ask for their burnt ends, they aren’t on the menu and they don’t always have them, but you’re in for a treat if you happen to be there when they do.
If looking for a more family friendly place to have lunch, there is a Happy Joe’s Pizza and Ice Cream Parlor at 1412 30th Street. Across the street is also Cool Beanz Coffeehouse, 1325 30th Street, a great coffee shop with teas, baked goods, and a nice sandwich menu all paired with a relaxed environment. They often have live entertainment and special tastings, too.
The College Hill District is a nice collective of cohesive businesses, where the owners all work together to continue to build up the area. They plan two different annual events, where the whole neighborhood comes together to highlight and celebrate the uniqueness of the area.
In May is the Retro Rally, a street fair on 30th featuring an antique car show, pin-up contest, and live music. In October is their Hill-o-Ween family friendly trick-or-treat event. In December is their Holiday Walk where each establishment has specials and attendees can hop from place to place, enjoying the area and the season.
The College Hill District is a fun way to support local business and experience a very creative and friendly neighborhood in the Quad Cities. For a full business directory, visit their website at http://www.collegehilldistrict.com.
