It is a rare occasion when you enter a hotel and think that you are in an art gallery. This is the experience that my friends and I had when we went to the new Current hotel in downtown Davenport, Iowa.
Long time friends were visiting from California and Wisconsin and my local friend and I were showing off the best of the Quad Cities. We hadn’t seen the new Current hotel yet so we were all impressed with the work that had been done to make a showcase hotel.
We were greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable hostess, Tiffany, who gave us a personal tour of the art collection in the public spaces of the hotel. It was as if we had entered a fine art gallery. Not only is the art collection impressive, but the hotel itself is in a historic renovated structure, the Putnam Building. The building is constructed of marble and granite with interesting architectural detail.
The VIVA restaurant is a beautiful contemporary design with a lounge that is out of Architectural Digest magazine. The menu is Baja/Mexican cuisine.
Across the hall from VIVA is the Reserve Room where you can do tequila tastings. It also is a dramatically appointed room with stunning art.
My friend from California was so impressed with the design and art in The Current Hotel that she wants to spend a few nights at the hotel when she returns next year. She was happy to learn that local artists fr0m the Hot Zone glass studio have made unique glass pieces for all rooms and these pieces are for sale. Since she had bought a piece of glass art during her last visit, she found this to be a fine addition to this hotel.
Since the UP skybar was not open until 4 pm, my Quad Cities friend and I returned a few days later for a relaxing breakfast outside on the rooftop. The furniture is large and comfortable with gas fire pits at most group seating area. The view of the Mississippi River and the surrounding area is stupendous. It is a must-visit venue! Their motto says it well, “We take an artful approach to every aspect of the guest experience.”
We will be returning for drinks in the near future. Who can stay away from the view?!
