I recently noticed a new business open up in the West End of Davenport, Chic Soiree, and decided to take a walk down to investigate. What I discovered was a delicious bakery with an amazing story behind it.
I was greeted by Sara Whelchel, a third generation cake baker, who kindly allowed me to hang out in her kitchen with her, while she frosted a cake and told me all about her new business.
Chic Soiree isn’t exactly new; it started as an in-home bakery business that Sara’s mother and aunt started three years ago. The storefront, located at 2002 W. 4th Street in Davenport, opened just 3 weeks ago for a soft opening, in order to work the kinks out before having a grand opening closer towards Halloween.
Sara’s grandmother started out owning a wedding shop, where she made cakes and decorations as well as other event accoutrements. Eventually she became a full-time cake baker and taught her daughters her trade. Because it was an in-home business, Sara stepped in to help alongside her family and developed a passion.
Chic Soiree is the only bakery in the Quad Cities that provides vegan and gluten-free baked goods. It is because of this niche market that they have grown to the point of being able to have a shop.
Chic Soiree has a variety of delicious baked goods available, though one can also call ahead with orders for special events, such as weddings, birthdays, or holidays. I’ve heard that they have a delicious recipe for Tres Leches cake as well as New York-style cheesecake.
They also have a notebook on their display case where you can write in requests, with your name and phone number, and when they do have it available, they will call you. I love that feature!
Currently the bakery hours are Monday-Friday 7:30am – 4:30pm and Saturdays 10am – 4:30pm. As they continue to grow and build the business, this may be subject to change. Check out Chic Soiree, watch for the ribbon cutting ceremony coming up soon, and visit sometime. The treats are delicious and it always feels good to support a locally-owned, family business.
