WAKE Brewing opened for business on Saturday. This has been a long time coming and has many people in the Quad Cities craft beer community very excited. I had to opportunity to get a sneak peak of the new place and sit down with the owners to hear all about our community’s next brewery.
Behind WAKE Brewing are brothers Jason and Justen Parris, who have been home brewing beers for the last 10 years. Members of MUGZ, the local home brewing club, and pioneers of REFS, the second club in the Quad Cities, the gentlemen have already made a name for themselves in that community. It didn’t surprise anyone when they decided to find a way to take their hobby to the next level.
Jason has been working in the craft beer industry for 10 years at Rock Island Brewing Co. as the talent buyer, product purchaser, and beer event promoter. He’s been watching the craft beer industry changes and trends and will head up the bar at Wake. His past experience will not only influence the beers they brew but also what other products they sell in-house.
Justen, an electrical engineer at the nuclear power plant, will be heading up the brewing side of operations. He has a knack for the scientific aspect of brewing and utilizes his talents to translate knowledge into delicious brews, knowing what changes or modifications to make to improve the quality of his creations.
The brothers are best friends and have always shared similar interests. For years they traveled around together in the band, Driver of the Year. Now they’ve moved onto a new venture, though music will always be integral to what they do.
“This is our new band,” Jason told me recently. “When we got our loan approved, Justen looked at me said, ‘Well, I guess we got our record deal.’”
