New I-74 Bridge 360 Virtual Reality is MUST SEE

“This was the most amazing experience! I thought it was kind of silly you were making me go to see the new I-74 bridge, but I’m so glad you did!” said my brother who was in town visiting from the Chicago suburbs. We also took our 15-year-old nephew who thought it was “so cool”. My in-laws were really impressed, too. Even our 2 year old had fun!

What is the I-74 Bridge 360 Virtual Reality (VR) Experience?
It’s a highly interactive technology experience that allows you to see what the new I-74 bridge will look like, what driving on it will be like and what the views from the new bridge will show.

How does it work?

  • Ask the library help desk to direct you to the VR bridge experience.
  • The staff will take you to a room with a monitor and computer as well as the headset and remote.
  • Then, you put on the adjustable headset goggles. These are SO fun!! When you turn your head and look up and down the video shows you what you would see if you were making the same motions in “real life.” So, it feels like reality (thus, virtual reality). And it’s a 360 view, so that means you can look all around and see what’s “there.”
  • The remote allows you to select the different views so you can shift to different vantage points and experience the bridge from all angles.
As you can see from the photos, kids of all ages enjoyed the experience though our little guy went to all fours when he was on top of the bridge. With the goggles on it sure feels like you’re high above the ground.

One of the unique bits about this experience is that the reality doesn’t actually exist yet…so all that you are seeing is a drawing/animated experience of the new bridge spans and even under the water. There are 6 different “angles” including views from the top of the new bridge, old bridge, what it will look like driving in the car, flying above it all, and even an underwater experience.

Where and when can you do this?
The I-74 bridge 360 VR experience will be at the Bettendorf Public Library from June 15 through Dec 31, 2018.

What did I learn?
The bridge will have 4 lanes each way!
There is a really nice bike/pedestrian walkway included.
Lots of mussels were relocated due to the bridge construction.
Flying over the bridge is a great view!
I might need to ask for 360 virtual reality goggles for my birthday – this was unbelievably fun!

I can’t recommend this experience enough. It was so much fun for all ages!! Did I mention it was free?
