Paint On The River At The Plein Air Paint Out

The Quad Cities is alive with the arts! Artists and interested viewers should attend The 2nd Annual Plein Air Paint Out at Beréskin Gallery in Bettendorf, Iowa. Artists from through out the region will come for an all day “paint out” on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For those that are new to the phrase, “En plein air (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ plɛn ɛːʁ], French for outdoors, or plein air) is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look.”

Being a frequent visitor and 2-year student at Beréskin Gallery, I have decided to join in the experience this year. I will be selecting my location this week and plan my painting needs for the day. I think a rolling cart of some type is in order filled with painting supplies, a chair, water, food, and various weather gear.

The views of the Mississippi River from Leach Park to Beréskin Gallery on the bike trail will be outstanding. The bike trail connects the entire painting area and subject matter includes “nature, industrial architecture, boats, and river views.” I am happy to hear that the Davenport Boat Club will be sailing that day and giving classes. Having sailing boats in view will be an interesting addition to my composition.

In the past I have painted plein air on the Mississippi River in a workshop given by Chicago artist, Nina Weiss, through Beréskin Gallery, and in a landscape painting class by St. Ambrose University artist/faculty member, Kristin Quinn. I found them to be challenging experiences and entertaining ones for area visitors and residents. I had to learn to block out interested people watching me as I paint.

Here I am painting along the Mississippi River.

After a day of plein air painting, I will be returning to Beréskin Gallery for a gathering with other artists where we will look at our work and discuss our work. Music and food will be a welcome addition to the camaraderie of the day.

I would love to have all my artist friends and other interested artists join us. You may register for the day at Beréskin Gallery between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. the day of the event or during the days before the event. It is only $15.00 and all painters are welcome. Please join me in an artistic day along the Mississippi River!
