The smell of fried food hits the Midwestern air, and you can’t help but think one thing — it’s fair season! That one time of year you ditch those healthy eating habits and spend all night singing along to catchy music. Add in some cool rides and livestock it’s the essence of the Midwest on a sole property. The Mississippi Valley Fair did what it does best once again — bringing the food and the fun all into one venue.

Meatheads Meat Market, located at 520 10th Ave. W. in Milan, Illinois, is one of the best butcher shops in the Quad Cities Area. Opened up in 2004, Meatheads offers fresh, store-made offerings from burgers, to tenderloins to smoked salmon, but their brats are what initially caught my eye.

Armored Gardens, located at 315 Pershing Ave, opened up in downtown Davenport in late October of 2017. After being open almost a year, it has quickly become a fun hotspot for all types of people, for many reasons. Armored Gardens features craft brews, with over 100 beers on tap, and BBQ but with a few delicious twists. The bar holds the most tap handles over any other business in the Quad Cities Area. To keep up with their ever-changing list, one can download an app called “Digital Pour”, that shows just what they have on tap and how much is left, as well as various other little tidbits relating to each beer. Customers order their beers at the bar by number.

There’s a new (well, new to me) MUST-TRY eatery in Rock Island and it’s called Pee Wee’s Restaurant. This family affair is run by Rock Island native, Will Clay, and named after his father. His mother greeted us while we were there and was a lovely woman. Even though it opened in Spring 2017 we just recently had a chance to try it out. Boy, are we glad we didn’t put it off any longer!

As a teacher, pride for your students never ceases to fail. Whether a homework assignment, an extracurricular, a service activity, or something different altogether — it’s an indescribable feeling. It bubbles up inside of you, and you are bursting to the seams with joy. When they get the idea to start a business to make money for a school trip, so they can further their education, and manage to present their concepts in front of the Quad Cities Chamber, you can’t help but smile. This is exactly what my former students, Sergio Garcia, 12, and Jesús Gutierrez, 13, from my time student teaching 7th and 8th grade ESL English/Language Arts at Glenview have done to “keep their eyes on the prize” and succeed in furthering their education.

In June my friends and I attended a production at The Black Box Theatre. The theatre, which opened in 2016, is located in downtown Moline, Illinois. It is within walking distance to many locally owned restaurants, drinking establishments, and hotels. This makes for a good mix of dinner and theatre for both residents and visitors to the Quad Cities.
