In June my friends and I attended a production at The Black Box Theatre. The theatre, which opened in 2016, is located in downtown Moline, Illinois. It is within walking distance to many locally owned restaurants, drinking establishments, and hotels. This makes for a good mix of dinner and theatre for both residents and visitors to the Quad Cities.
The theatre is owned by two talented theatrical artists, Lora Adams and David Miller. Their creative and dynamic partnership is evident in the strong attention to detail. I found The Black Box to be a delightful addition to the Quad Cities theatre scene. The moment that I entered I was fascinated by the intimacy of the space. From the lobby, to the seating (only 60 seats) to the stage and live musical accompaniment, I felt that I was a part of the venue and the production.
The June 2018 production was a musical comedy, Baby: A New Musical, written by Sybille Pearson with music and lyrics by David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr. and directed by theatre co-owner, David M. Miller. I thought that the two act production was both humorous and touching as it led the audience through various couples experiences and their emotional reactions to expectant parenthood.
The musicians that accompanied the production were outstanding. What a treat to have live music! I will be returning to see the other productions this year at The Black Box Theatre. I encourage people to support this fine local theatre company.
