I started planting the large empty spaces of my property in town when I first purchased my house which has a large extra lot. The extra lot which was once a lawn is now wooded and full of flowers and ground cover along with deer, rabbits, squirrels, many species of birds, opossums, raccoons, chip monks, ground hogs, and an occasional fox. I have also heard the howling of coyotes in the ravines.
All the spring bulbs and early spring plants have begun to pop up all over my garden spaces…daffodils, hyacinths, bluebells, snow on the mountain, grape hyacinth, tulips, and blood root. With the first flowers I become anxious for the many opportunities in the Quad Cities to go shopping at spring plant sales that are scattered through out the spring months, as well as a few in the fall.
Being an avid gardener with several Master Gardner friends and being from three known generations of gardening addicts, my car should have a bumper sticker that states, “Stops for Plant Sales”! My trunk is always ready with boxes, plastic sheeting and a small shovel just in case a plant alert catches my eye.
There are many plant sales through out the surrounding area. Here are some of my favorite plant sale events in the Quad Cities. I hope that they entice you to start your gardening plans for this year:
