Beréskin Gallery and Art Academy presents “Moments and Intervals” an art exhibit by Peter T. Xiao, an art professor at Augustana College. Xiao’s work results from looking at life in brief or long “intervals”: objects in studio, his face in a mirror, and models from figure study sessions. He is inspired by a quote from Dr. Samuel Johnson that reads:
“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, wither thou goest.”
Peter T. Xiao was born in Beijing, China and spent teenage years during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. When Nixon helped reopen that country to the world, he was playing with snakes and wild life on a labor farm in southern China while his disgraced literary parents toiled in the rice paddies. After a spell of “reeducation” by farming after high school, Xiao went to Beijing Normal University to study English, which led him in 1980 to Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for his BA in fine arts and English. After getting a MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, he worked at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, taught life drawing part-time and exhibited in Philadelphia and New York. In 1989 he joined the studio art faculty at Augustana College where he is now professor of art. Peter and his wife Li live in Bettendorf, Iowa with children Sophia and Alexander.
The exhibition opens October 21st. A reception will be held on November 3, 2017 from
