As the calendar flips over to October, the hunt for the perfect pumpkin (or pumpkins) is on. Other fall produce like apples, gourds, squash, and potatoes can all be found at local markets.
You’re in for a treat! Get all of your favorite apple products in LeClaire, Iowa, on Sunday, October 9, during Apple Fest on the River. This fun and free, family event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. features apples, apple cider, and a variety of homemade food items including pie, strudel, scones, and cupcakes. There will also be a truckload of pumpkins and gourds. Browse the wide variety of unique craft and gift items and the LeClaire businesses. The LeClaire Lions Club will be selling lunch items. The QC Antique Car Club will be displaying their cars, and there will be a “Kids Only” area for a small fee.
The Freight House Farmer’s Market in Davenport is a great place to find local produce, mums, fall plants, pumpkins, and more. The outdoor market continues through the end of October. The indoor market is open year-round.
Mercado on Fifth on 5th Ave. and 12th St. in Moline is a weekly night market in its first year! It’s on Friday nights from 5-9 pm through the end of October. They have a variety of vendors from local produce and crafts, to imported Moroccan oils, Mexican candy, and African incense. Come down to support local businesses and have a bite to eat on Friday night with us!
Country Corner Farm Market, located on US Hwy 150, 2 miles North of Alpha, Illinois, has long been a favorite place for finding the “perfect pumpkin.” They have over 20 acres of pumpkins to choose from, an interactive corn maze, barnyard zoo, haunted paintball indoor range, corn cannons, cow train, mining for gems, hayrack rides, bee barn, timber park playground, and a craft and produce market. There are special events each weekend in October with giant pumpkins and the pumpkin cannon.
In the crisp autumn air, there is no better place to watch the sun set than Nahant Marsh in Davenport! Join us at Autumn Fest on Thursday, October 6, to celebrate Nahant Marsh’s 16th Birthday. We’ll have live music from local favorite, Ellis Kell as well as William Borg Schmitt; guided night hikes on the trails; hayrack rides; meet and greets with our snakes and turtles; an all-ages nature-themed pumpkin carving/decorating contest; food; beer samples from Front Street Brewery, UBrew and Mugz; and, (weather permitting) marshmallow roasting at the fire pit.
It’s a Pumpkin Extravaganza at the Quad City Botanical Center, 2525 4th Avenue in Rock Island, Ill., for the month of October. Special pumpkin-related events take place each Sunday afternoon in October from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday events are included with regular admission.
Oct. 2 – Families can make scarecrows to be displayed the gardens of the Botanical Center for the month of October. All supplies for the scarecrows are provided!
Oct. 9 – Make a Halloween legend mask or bat-themed origami, and learn about monster and carnivorous plants. There will also be spooky stories and a Halloween hike in the gardens.
Oct. 16 – Families can enjoy pumpkin painting, leaf rubbings, and make your own luminary and seed cone bird feeders.
Oct. 23 – Families can Mad Scientist experiments. Make your own goo, and watch leaf chromatography (separating the colors within one leaf).
Oct. 30 – Children can join in the costume parade, candy hunt, and storytime.
Hundreds of arts and crafts vendors from across the Midwest can be found at the annual MIP Arts & Crafts Fair on Sunday, Oct. 2 from 8 am-4 pm. Wear your walking shoes so you can comfortably get through all the vendors. The craft fair is held at Eriksen Chevy-Buick Center, 325 E. 1st Ave. in Milan, IL.
