Lt. Robert E. Lee

In 1837, Lt. Robert E. Lee surveyed the Rock Island Rapids at this section of the Mississippi River for the U.S. Corps of Engineers so that a channel could be cut through the rocks in those rapids.  He later became General Robert E. Lee for the Confederacy.
