Tyler selected Wicked for book club in celebration of The Project’s 40th anniversary. There is a long history of shared connection between The Wizard of Oz, Judy Garland, and the LGBTQ+ community. In fact, the term “friend of Dorothy” was once used by queer people as coded language to help identify each other. Plus, he was looking for another reason to listen to the Wicked soundtrack!
This is the book that started it all! The basis for the smash hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Gregory Maguire’s breathtaking New York Times "bestseller Wicked "views the land of Oz, its inhabitants, its Wizard, and the Emerald City, through a darker and greener (not rosier) lens. Brilliantly inventive, Wicked" offers us a radical new evaluation of one of the most feared and hated characters in all of literature: the much maligned Wicked Witch of the West who, as Maguire tells us, wasn’t nearly as Wicked "as we imagined."
About Tyler: Tyler is the Development Director at The Project of the Quad Cities, an organization dedicated to caring for people living with HIV and LGBTQ+ folks. As a proud member of the queer community, Tyler hopes to make a difference through his work at The Project. He also serves on the Foundation board for the Davenport Public Library and as chair of the WVIK/NPR community advisory board. During his free time, Tyler enjoys hanging out with his cats, Basil & Mothman, listening to audiobooks, and playing video games. He’s also an avid D&D fan!
