Capitol Theatre Renovations Complete

The Capitol Theatre in downtown Davenport had its official ribbon cutting ceremony on July 12, 2023. The ceremony allowed visitors to check out the newly renovated space before anyone else. The theatre is in the Kahl Building which has seen its fair share of Quad Cities history, at more than 100 years old. It famously hosted Buddy Holly’s last tour, 5 days before his death. It was used for concerts, ballet, theater, and as a Christian Center. Alcoves on the sides hosted a grand piano and an organ.

Now, after being renovated over the last five years, the theatre looks like its opening day on December 25, 1920. The new owners persevered through COVID and other challenges to restore the theatre and the rest of the ten-story building with a $24 million renovation.

Much of the theatre has retained its original look, like the beautiful murals on the ceiling, which were hand painted to match the originals. However, the nine upper floors now boast modern apartments with luxury flooring, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and washers and dryers. The 65 apartments above the theatre are all accessible by the original gold elevators.

Interested in checking out the Capitol Theatre for yourself? The theatre will open once again on Wednesday, September 13th, 2023, for its first concert since 2010, with Dayseeker taking the stage. Dayseeker is an American post-hardcore band from Orange County, California. The concert is the earliest event to be held in the theatre with others scheduled in the fall, like the TED x Davenport talk, and EMO Orchestra.
