Genesius Guild: Outdoor Classical Theatre in the QC
Each summer, I love attending the shows presented by Genesius Guild in Rock Island's Lincoln Park. As a theatre-lover, of course, there's just something magical about seeing traditional theatre performed, but there's something even more special about the way Genesius Guild brings these classic stories to life. Maybe it's the location. Maybe it's the tradition. Maybe it's the dedication of local artists (both behind and on the stage), or maybe it's just the magic of great stories told for hundreds of years being offered right here in the Quad Cities. More likely, it's a bit of all that.

I love that the shows are classic.
Genesius Guild chooses to perform the classics. You'll see Greek drama, Greek comedy, works of Shakespeare, and other classical authors. The Greek tragedies are performed in masks. The period costumes and scenery help bring the audience right to “ancient Verona” or wherever the stage is set. I should also mention, some of the Greek comedy performances are contemporary re-writes so the jokes are relevant to today's audiences.
In addition to traditional theatre, Ballet Quad Cities takes the stage each summer. Truly, there is nothing as lovely as ballet under the stars.
I love that the productions are outside.
Nestled among the towering trees of Lincoln Park in Rock Island, the Genesius Guild Stage makes me feel like I'm truly part of the performance. The location is an experience in itself. It will be hard to believe you are right in the middle of town as you watch the sword fights and get caught up in the churning emotions on stage.
The stage is a half-circle of Greek Columns and a Bedford stone building that was a former wading pool. The “off stage” area is behind the stage and the tight confines are often an adventurous challenge for actors as they change costumes and transform in the “backstage” area. A trip to the bathroom might find you catching a glimpse of a wayward soldier hiding out waiting for his cue.
The absolute best part of the location though is that often, by the end of the show, the stars are out. As the clapping rings through the park, the stars are out overhead. Walking to my vehicle after a show, I can't help but feel that this is how theatre was meant to be seen and felt: in the open, at one with nature, suspending the reality of life for a bit, and filled with the wonder of a great story.

You can bring your own lawn chair!
I love that they are free.
All performances are free. Instead of charging admission, Genesius Guild asks for donations from the general public and support from foundations. Donations and grants are incredibly important to the continuing operation of the Genesius Guild. Their work is dedicated to keeping the classics truly accessible to all. All ages are free.
I love the local talent.
The Quad Cities is overflowing with theatre talent and it is quite evident in these classic performances. From the masked actors to the toes of the dances on point to the sound technician, you will be amazed and impressed. Performers of all ages grace the stage and keep things on track backstage.
Genesius Guild offers an amazing opportunity to young actors, actresses, and technical crew members. The opportunity to learn and develop is available to all ages. Any middle school, high school, or college students are invited to try out or work backstage. They will gain valuable experience working with seasoned cast members, directors, and technical staff who bring years of talented experience.

I love that the Quad Cities offers something so unique.
Since the first show (Antigone), Genesius Guild has focused on offering ancient Greek and Shakespearian comedies and tragedies. Not to be too repetitive, but did I mention it's OUTSIDE? The ambiance surrounding the performances is unbeatable. The mission to offer a theatre experience accessible to everyone touches my heart. This IS true art. Art for the sake of making a difference in the world, making it a little better one show at a time.
