Healthy Harvest Urban Farms

Written by: Deborah Davis

A few years back father and son duo, Chad and Nieko Summers, started Healthy Harvest Urban Farms in East Moline, Illinois. It’s an organic community garden and garden center. They have recently taken this venture and extended into a storefront in downtown Rock Island.

Located at 1616 2nd Ave. in Rock Island, Illinois, is their grocery store called Healthy Harvest Urban Farms and an all organic and vegan eatery, Green Garden Café. The store offers an array of organic products from locally-sourced produce to bulk goods, such as beans, oats, and spices, to daily items like milk, eggs, and cheese.

The café is vegan and all organic. They feature wraps, salads, and smoothies. I had their Miso Ginger Salad and my companion had their Tofu Taco Salad. Both were delicious, filling, and reasonably priced at $7.

I had a million questions about their mission and their offerings, all of which were welcomed as the business has a focus on education. The Summers’ family began their farm with the intent of growing food that is beneficial to one’s health and sustainability, in hopes to share this information in the larger community.
