Miss Effie’s Country Flowers

Recently I took an afternoon drive to visit Miss Effie's Country Flowers and Garden Stuff, located just outside of the Quad Cities in Donahue, Iowa. Nestled in the rolling hills of farm country, off a gravel road, is one of the most beautiful places you can visit.

It is a “you-pick” flower farm, the first of its kind in Iowa, opened in 2002. You pay $25 and they give you an empty milk jug gallon with the top cut off and some gardening sheers.  You then can wander all around the farm, picking flowers and enjoying the scenery.

The are many types of flowers grown all over the farm, all of them up for grabs. The farm uses organic pesticides and fertilizers, so the environment is a safe place for all ages.

Miss Effie's hosts a lot of different kinds of events. In the past they've hosted rehearsal dinners, weddings, and showers of all kinds. Often, people will bring out a picnic lunch or share a bottle of wine while enjoying one of several cozy places to sit, the “Corn-Zebo” being a favorite.

If you're curious as to the availability of space or if it would be the right place for your next event, the owners welcome calls and visits during operating hours. Their season is from June 1st until the first frost (typically in October).
