Booked and Busy: A Literary Journey Through the Quad Cities

By: Joan Kranovich, Vice President of Business Growth & Director, Sports QC

As someone who loves storytelling in all its forms and who reads incessantly, I’ve always believed the best destinations read like a good book. They are usually layered, surprising, and full of character. The Quad Cities is one of those places. Beyond the river views and vibrant downtowns, there’s a quietly thriving literary scene, which is made even richer by an equally strong coffee culture.

For readers, writers, and anyone who loves pairing a good book with a great latte, the Quad Cities offers the perfect blend. For those who love lattes and books, I invite you to use my list as an inspiration for your own Quad Cities itinerary!

Morning

The Brewed Book | Davenport

I like to start the day at The Brewed Book, a used bookstore and café tucked into Davenport’s Hilltop Campus Village. It’s an ideal first stop for literary travelers who want to get lost in floor to ceiling walls of books. You can also grab a pretty tasty latte or Lotus energy drink while you browse or to enjoy while you read.

This stop could also start your adventure on the Quad Cities Coffee Trail, which highlights locally owned coffee shops throughout our destination. There’s something especially fitting about beginning a literary-inspired day with a locally brewed cup of coffee and a book you didn’t plan to buy but can’t leave behind.

Late Morning

Source Bookstore | Downtown Davenport

Next, head downtown to Source Bookstore, one of the Quad Cities’ most iconic literary landmarks. It is actually Iowa’s oldest and largest used bookstore. It is part bookstore, part treasure hunt. Source is packed with books, magazines, vinyl records, and fun finds. It’s the kind of place where you’re encouraged to wander and let curiosity lead the way.

After browsing, take a short walk along the Mississippi Riverfront and pop into our Union Station Destination Center. We have some fun local books like Jonathan Turner’s “100 Things to Do in the Quad Cities Before You Die,” and “Citadel of Sin: The John Looney Story.” If you’re following the Coffee Trail, this might be great time to grab another drink from a nearby coffee shop like Rise Neighborhood Café or 392Caffe. Get the mushroom latte and thank me later!

Late Morning

Good Spot Bookshop | Davenport

Looking to add a little romance to your itinerary instead? Good Spot Bookshop is a romance-only bookstore filled with colorful covers, feel-good stories, and bookish merch that’s as fun to browse as it is to photograph. Even if romance isn’t your usual genre, this stop is a delightful reminder that reading is meant to be joyful. This spot is located near NorthPark Mall and is an excellent new addition to the Quad Cities literary scene.

Lunch | Downtown Davenport

Downtown Davenport makes it easy to pair lunch with reading time. Choose a walkable café or restaurant and enjoy the slower pace that literary travel encourages. Lunch is definitely one of my favorite parts of the day. I’d highly recommend Miss Phay’s Café on 5th & Brady for amazing eats or City Loafers, inside The Current Iowa Hotel, for a relaxed and quiet atmosphere, perfect for reading!

Afternoon

The Coffee House | East Davenport

One of my favorite stops in the Quad Cities is The Coffee House in East Davenport. This East Village neighborhood café is not only a beloved stop on the Quad Cities Coffee Trail that offers coffee flights, it also hosts monthly book clubs that bring readers together in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

For visitors, this is a great reminder that literary tourism isn’t just about bookstores; it’s about shared experiences. Timing your trip around a book club meeting offers a unique way to connect with locals, discover new reads, and experience the Quad Cities as part of the community rather than just a visitor. Bonus: If talking about a great read and wine are what you think of when you think “book club,” The Coffee House also sells beer, wine, seltzers, mimosas, and ciders.

Evening

Davenport Public Library

The Davenport Public Library system plays an important role in the region’s literary culture, offering book clubs, author talks, and community programs throughout the year. For those who live in or near the Quad Cities, our libraries offer book clubs for all ages. From elementary school kids and teens to adults. They have something for every genre of interest to explore. Visitors, the library also allows you to access their services and even be set up with a temporary library card if you’re in town for a longer term and want to check out some books!

Evening

The Atlas Collective | Downtown Moline

I like to either start or end the day in downtown Moline at The Atlas Collective, where books, coffee, and community intersect. Whether you’re enjoying a chai tea, attending a creative event, or winding down with your latest read, it’s the perfect place to slow the pace of the day. The atmosphere is so warm, welcoming, and fun, you won’t be able to leave without a fun drink and a new or used book that you didn’t know you needed to read. What makes the Quad Cities special for literary and coffee enthusiasts isn’t just the individual stops; it’s the sense of belonging they create. The Atlas Collective is especially known for being many of our favorite spaces to feel at home.

Dinner | Downtown Moline

Downtown Moline offers some of the region’s best restaurants, which makes it very hard to choose where to grab a bite to eat. However, some of my favorites are Bass Street Chop House and Fifth Avenue Syndicate. The atmosphere is cozy, intimate, and effortlessly inviting. These are the kinds of places that complement a slower style of travel, where the lighting is just right and the conversation flows easily. If you’re traveling solo, they are also great spots to be able to focus and read a few chapters while you enjoy their outstanding cuisine.

Night | Downtown Moline

Stay the night nearby at The Axis Hotel or Element Moline and wake up to start your morning at nearby Dead Poet’s Espresso. Sip a latte named for one of history’s great poets and soak in the playful, literary-inspired atmosphere. This QC Coffee Trail stop brings words, coffee, and creativity together to set the tone for your next day of exploration.

Whether you’re planning a solo reading retreat, a girlfriends’ getaway, or a family trip inspired by the Quad Cities Coffee Trail, the Quad Cities is a place where great books and great coffee naturally come together.
