National Travel and Tourism Week: Why Travel Matters to the Quad Cities

There’s a certain kind of energy you can feel in the Quad Cities, especially this time of year.

Patios start to fill. Trails pick up traffic. Downtowns feel a little more alive. You might not always notice it happening, but you feel it.

That’s travel.

During the U.S. travel industry's annual tradition - National Travel and Tourism Week, May 3-9 - we’re taking a moment to call it what it is: essential.

This year’s theme, “Postmarked: Essential,” is a reminder that travel isn’t just about vacations or weekends away. It’s about movement between people, ideas, and opportunity. Every visit leaves a mark. And here in the Quad Cities, those marks add up in meaningful ways.

Last year alone, the Quad Cities regional destination saw:

  • 6.1 million visits
  • 13.9 million visitor days
  • An average stay of 2.3 days

Travel and tourism translates to families discovering a new favorite restaurant or cyclists stopping along the trail and extending their stay. It’s tournaments, meetings, and events that bring new faces and new dollars into our community.

In fact, May consistently sees some of the highest visitor activity of the year. And it’s no coincidence that National Travel and Tourism Week falls right at the start of it, because when visitation increases, so does impact.

Local businesses see more foot traffic, hotels fill rooms, and attractions welcome new audiences. Not to mention, the tax revenue generated helps support the infrastructure and services we all rely on. This means a higher quality of life and place for our first customer, the Quad Citizen.

That’s where destination marketing organizations like Visit Quad Cities come in.

Our role is to keep that momentum going.  We tell the story of this place in a way that draws people in and gives them a reason to stay. Every campaign, every piece of content, every partnership is designed with one goal in mind: inspiring a visit.

Travel keeps our community circulating: it supports jobs, it fuels growth, and it helps shape the Quad Cities into a place people want to visit and a place we’re proud to call home.

So this week, as we recognize National Travel and Tourism Week, we’re not just celebrating an industry, we’re celebrating the impact it leaves behind, and the momentum it creates for a better future.

Always remember, it all starts with a visit.
